What is Delaware?

Delaware is the second smallest state in the union. Its 1,982 square miles makes it larger than Rhode Island, and about 250 square miles larger than Harris County, Texas. The population is 873,000. There are twice as many people living in prison in the U.S. as there are living in Delaware. In other words Delaware is small. Only one Representative in the House of Representatives. But there are some nice bonuses to Delaware: No sales tax, legal sports gambling, very clean rest stops and it is legal to fire a gun into the air on New Years Eve as long as you aim in the direction of New Jersey.

Where is Delaware?

Texas, Florida, California, Chicago are all easy states to find on a map, you may even be geographically astute and be able to point out the states of Colorado, Vermont, New Hampshire and Canada but you probably will stumble when it comes to Delaware. Many believe it is somewhere in the far Northeast, next to the state of New England but that is wrong. Delaware is not there, it is somewhere else.

How can I get to Delaware?

If you would like to travel to Delaware you will probably have to come by automobile. There are no major airports unless you are in the military. Interstate 95 goes through the north bulb of Delaware for about 22 miles. The state was kind enough to put up a toll booth to charge you for what is not even the length of a marathon. There are other routes through the long part of the state. There is also the Cape May-Lewis Ferry that goes from the southern tip of New Jersey to the beach areas of Sussex County.

Where did Delaware come from?

Delaware was not originally a tiny sliver of a state. It was put in this dismal position by its founder Josiah Delaware in seventeen-something-something. As he was standing on the top of his sailing ship heading down a river he had just finished naming for himself he looked at the Delmarva Peninsula and decided it looked like a big fried chicken wing. He claimed the entire area between the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware River to be known as Delaware and he decided to dedicate the land to chicken farming.

Delaware is now only a small part of the peninsula now because during the revolution against England Josiah Delaware did nothing. When George Washington came to him and asked for his help crossing the Delaware River Josiah said “George, It's Christmas, just calm down and have some chicken” Washington was displeased and when the war ended, much of Josiah's land was given to Maryland and Virginia. When it came time to sign the Constitution Josiah was first in line to prevent his losing any more land. Thus Delaware calls it's self “The First State”.

The Chicken farming of Delaware had a profound effect on the dietary habits of the English colonies. In England and Europe they ate ducks and geese like American's eat chicken. But thanks to Josiah and his chicken obsession, as well as the outbreak of Dutch duck disease in 1819, Americans chose cluck over duck and the chicken industry boomed.

Who are Famous people from Delaware?

I am not from Delaware, so now you care a lot less about this question, but I will tell you some great people from the blue rock state. Elisabeth Shue was born in Wilmington. She was in Back to the Future Part II and III. Henry Heimlich invented the the Heimlich Maneuver long after his birth and childhood in Wilmington. Joe Biden, current Vice President of the United States was NOT born in Delaware. The duPont family is famous for Teflon, Spandex, Nylon and Kevlar, which is ironic because the company started out making gunpowder in Wilmington. Michael Jackson was not from Delaware.

What is there to do in Delaware?

Delaware is one of the lucky 20 states with ocean beaches. You can go to those beaches and do beach things. You could get a boat and sail across to Portugal if you wanted to. There are fish ready to be caught, deer ready to be shot, horses that trot, thoughts to be thought and things to be bought at this Mid-Atlantic vacation spot. Or you could just take pictures of your dogs.

What is up with Delaware's flag?

I will tell you what's up. The flag is aqua blue, so it stands out from the other flags. The two men on the flag are a chicken farmer and a dandy with a gun. The chicken farmer is explained above, he has a shovel in his hand for chicken picken. The dandy with the gun is there to show that Delaware is not all business, sometimes Delaware is fabulous and violent. The shield in the middle shows the story of Delaware's agriculture. The wheat and the corn is for feeding chickens and the cow is also for feeding chickens. Under the men is a banner with the words “liberty and independence” because Delaware prefers liberty and independence to freedom and autonomy. The sailboat is up there to symbolize the sailboat industry of Wilmington. The whole mural is on a diamond because Delaware people love their bling-bling. The date, December 7, 1787 is an eerie 154-year warning about the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
